San Diego
Dr. Jessica de Souza recently completed her PhD in Electrical Engineering (Medical Devices and Systems) at the University of California, San Diego. Her doctoral research in the Digital Health Technologies Lab focused on advancing equitable access to lactation support through the integration of artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, mobile health applications, and mixed-methods approaches for identifying breastfeeding challenges. She was a visiting researcher at the Women’s Health Department of Nursing at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where she investigated AI-based detection and classification of nipple trauma. Additional work at UNIFESP includes the use of voice-enabled technologies to support data tracking and information access for new parents in home environments. Her multidisciplinary research spans both clinical and non-clinical domains, developing tools to aid healthcare providers in the early identification of lactation concerns and designing patient-facing technologies to enhance access to trustworthy postpartum and infant care information beyond traditional healthcare settings. Currently, Jessica is a postdoctoral associate at the Center for Global Women's Health Technologies at Duke University, promoting equitable AI use for cervical cancer applications.
